Simcoe and Norfolk County are beautiful year-round, but it’s hard to beat the fall season. The area has some of the most stunning fall foliage in Ontario and there are so many things to see and do, it’s a great time of year for a quick getaway.
If you’re looking for a quick weekend trip or a fun way to spend your Saturday this fall, here are some of our favourite things to do in the Simcoe area:
1. Visit a local winery or brewery
Prince Edward County and the Niagara region aren’t the only places to find award-winning wineries, cideries and breweries. Some of our favourites include Blue Elephant Craft Brew House, where you can sample local beers and food that focuses on seasonal and local produce. Or, head to Bonnieheath Estate Lavender and Winery, where you can explore the lavender fields and vineyard.
2. Norfolk County Fair
If you’re looking for some old-fashioned family fun, visit the Norfolk County Fair from October 8-14 in the heart of Simcoe. Featuring rides, a horse show, live entertainment, delicious food from local vendors and more. Stop by for a day or get your week-long pass so you can enjoy every day of this popular, family-friendly event!
3. Norfolk Arts Centre
Norfolk’s public art gallery showcases some of the best in local, regional and national art, with special exhibitions in addition to their permanent collection of over 1000 pieces. The Norfolk Arts Centre’s mission is to preserve art and educate the community, and its location in a stunning century building makes it an ideal stop on your weekend getaway. Take a stroll through their gift shop and take home a piece of local art with you!
4. Friday the 13th
If you’re a motorcycle enthusiast, mark your calendar for Friday, September 13th! Every Friday the 13th, Port Dover attracts motorcyclists from all across North America for a large gathering hosted by the Port Dover Kinsmen. Friday the 13th is also a great excuse to visit Port Dover, go camping and eat some delicious local food.
5. Apple picking
Nothing says “fall” quite like apple picking! There are several orchards throughout the county that offer apple picking, but the fun doesn’t stop there. The Norfolk Fruit Growers’ Association’s Apple Place is one of the best places to stock up on apple gadgets, candies and their famous apple cider donuts. There’s no better way to spend a fall afternoon!
6. Spa day
Whether you’re looking for a romantic getaway with your partner or a day trip with your friends, the Elements Day Spa is the perfect place for some much needed rest and relaxation! Their day spa packages offer services including manicures, pedicures, massages, and meal and appetizer options. They even have an indoor salt water pool with views of Lake Erie.
