10 Tips for Maintaining Your New Home

Moving into a new-build home might be one of the best feelings there is. Everything is brand new, clean, and state-of-the-art. In order to keep your new home this way, it’s important to stay on top of some important tasks. Here are our 10 tips for maintaining your new home:

1. Have Your HVAC Equipment Serviced Annually

To keep your equipment working in tip-top order, it’s important to schedule maintenance at least once a year. Annual maintenance will help prevent breakdowns before they arise.

2. Replace Your Furnace Filter Once A Season

Aim to have extra furnace filters on-hand so that, in between service calls, you can change them out once a season, or more often if you have pets, allergies, or have completed a renovation.

3. Wipe Down Walls

In any home, walls, especially near light switches and doors become marked with handprints and other residue. Using a gentle soap and water mixture, wipe down your walls every few months to renew that freshly painted look.

4. Touch Up Paint in High Traffic Areas

Sometimes, soap and water just aren’t enough. Ask your home builder for a list of the paint colours used in your home so you can keep a little on hand for touch-ups where necessary.

5. Protect Your Floors

Affix pads to the bottom of your furniture on all areas with hard flooring and add area rugs where possible. If you have pets, keep their nails trimmed short to prevent scratches to your floors.

6. Use A Drain Catcher In Your Shower & Kitchen

This simple purchase can be picked up at your local hardware store or at the dollar store and can save you a lot of grief and money on a plumbing bill!

7. Maintain Your Curb Appeal

Not only will your neighbours will thank you, but maintaining your home’s curb appeal will also benefit you financially in the long run. Rake your leaves, keep up your landscaping, and clean your gutters to keep your home’s exterior looking brand new.

8. Train Your Pets

Those of us with fur babies would do just about anything for them — but having a pet that’s not housebroken can damage to your home.

9. Deep Clean All Appliances

Make a point to deep clean your refrigerator, oven, and dishwasher several times a year to keep them working well and your home smelling fresh.

10. Organize and Declutter

Over time, it’s easy to acquire lots of unnecessary things and it can become quite overwhelming. Every time you buy something new, try to make a point of also donating something that you don’t need. The feeling is liberating and you will appreciate a tidier home!
